Helping You Acquire, Convert, and Retain Customers

Writing from my Home in Spokane
Apart from a summer in Maryland in 2011, I have always resided in the West. In 2023, after searching and AirBnB-ing smaller cities in the Pacific Northwest, my wife and I decided to put down roots in Spokane, WA. Together we garden, cook, eat, walk, hike, read, and sit our way through four distinct seasons in our cozy home.

“Why Do You Like Being a Freelance Copywriter?”
You mean apart from having the freedom to hike, ski, or mow the lawn on a Wednesday morning?!
Seriously… the “freelance” part does come with some perks (though I usually don’t get national holidays off)…
But being a copywriter is way better than I initially imagined, and for three reasons:
-
This answer might come as a surprise, but marketing and copywriting is at least 70% research. You have to dive deep into the business, available marketing channels, competition, and target audience before you write a single word. Being an ADHD kinda of guy, I can’t help but be curious about niche topics and the inner-workings of different industries. And once my curiosity is satiated, the project becomes a fascinating puzzle; a race to find the value-packed idea that causes my client’s business to CLICK with their customer.
-
Whether it be in the form of quick bullet points or long-form storytelling, I believe in the power of the written word. It can introduce concepts, shift attitudes, and bridge ideas across millennia. Copywriting is no different, only with an added obstacle: most people resist persuasion when they know you are trying to sell something. And I find this challenge is THRILLING. Though persuasion plays third fiddle to clarity and proof, it covers everything from overarching strategy to word choices in an individual sentence. Every word, every tactic, every structure matters, and has the potential to turn a curious bystander into a new customer.
-
Almost all of my clients are competent, creative, committed people. They mean well, but lack the skills to successfully market and sell their product or service. Change comes fast in the modern e-commerce world, and trying to run a business and stay on top of the rapid change would be absolutely overwhelming. Its a pleasure relieveing a burden from my clients back. They can focus elsewhere as their marketing is in the hands of someone who has done it before, can avoid key mistakes, and will make sure their efforts and investments are not wasted.
Some Other Stuff I Kinda Like A Lot…
How I Spend My Time When I’m Not Marketing or Copywriting.
Hiking
Nature moves at its own pace, standing in opposition to so many aspects of modernity. I find wandering the trails of mountains and forests to be not just a means of recharge, but also a means of rest, reflection, and revelation.

Skiing
A huge benefit of Spokane is having a local mountain just under an hour away. I can wake up, ski for a few hours, and make it back in time to still get a full days work in. I’ll be honest, I kinda suck, but I get to go faaaaaast!

Cooking
I grew up watching my mother make a lot of home-cooked meals. After college, some friends and I were eager for good food. So we pooled our spices, watched some youtube videos, and taught ourselves the basics. And its been smooth sailing every since (just kidding I mess up dishes all the time).

Baseball
Bay Area fan, so go Giants, 49er’s, and Sharks! Love all three, but baseball captured my heart the most. And it doesn’t hurt that its slower pace allows me to work while I watch, so I never miss a game!

Travel
Everyone loves a tropical beach, mountain, and jungle. And I’ve ever been much of a city guy… unless that city is made of stone and is in Europe! I love walking through churches, battlefields, ruins, castles, museums… with a little coffee or treat in between each thing :)

Reading
I like learning… like a lot. And while Youtube and podcasts have been a game changer, I still have a soft spot for hardcover books. I am usually in the midst of some combination of philosophy, history, theology, psychology, fantasy, classics, or pareenting books.
Yard Work
I also grew up watching my dad do yard work every Saturday morning. While I languished as a child, it’s nice to have an exercise that makes such an impact. It’s also nice to take a break from brain work and get some body work done!
Tabletop and Healthcare Question Time
“What are your favorite board games?”
Currently I am a little obsessed with ROOT, but whenever I can get the right group together I prefer to begin the night with Space Alert. And I always have a soft spot in my heart reserved for Cribbage!
“What DnD campaigns are you running right now?”
I am in the middle of two campaigns:
1) In my homebrewed world, players pursue a rogue illithid cult in league with a worldwide criminal order and extracting a mysterious substance for nefarious ends…
2) A heavily edited version of Tomb of Annihilation with more ports, more snakes, and more pirates. But still VERY deadly!
“What is Your Health Philosophy?”
Good sleep, a balanced diet, along with regular exercise and daily prayer/meditation, gets you 90% of the way there
Functional strength is better than just looking good (though looking good doesn’t hurt!)
Good form and proper warm-up before exercise is ESSENTIAL.
Doctors know what they are doing, so bring a notebook and ask them every relevant question you can imagine
Live healthy, but also don’t forget to live!
“What has Your Health Journey Been Like?”
Without disclosing too much information…
ADHD as a kid (but, like, for reals actually had it)
Broke 6 bones in 5 different accidents before I turned 16
Diagnosed with Graves Disease (not as bad as it sounds!) my senior year
3rd degree sprained both ankles, once playing frisbee and once dressed as Batman
Last year I tried to switch to toe shoes, got bilateral achilles tendonitis
“Any wargaming or TCG experience?
Not as much, but I was in third grade when Pokemon hit the states, so like very other boy my age I collected Pokemon cards, but never played. Believe it or not, the only TCG I have every played is… and I can’t believe I’m telling you this… the “Spongebob Squarepants Trading Card Game”.
Wargaming is more substantial: from 2007-2009 I dove deep into the Lord of the Rings war game by Games Workshop. Spent forever trying to find an army before I landed on Numenor. Planning on getting back into wargaming in the future, but plan on pivoting to a more historical setting eventually (sorry 40k…)

“How Did You Get Started Writing for Healthcare?
I wanted to add another niche to my field of expertise as a freelance copywriter. After trying out a few clients from different industries, I landed on healthcare for one simple reason: compassion. Healthcare copywriting requires empathizing with peoples pain and concern much more than other major industries such as tech. And given my training and experience as a pastor, that approach and tone came naturally to me as I wrote.
“How Did You Get Started Writing for DnD and Tabletop Games?”
When I transitioned to a career in copywriting, I knew it would be a confusing nightmare to learn the art of sales and marketing while also learning the nuances of a specific industry. So I chose a community and niche that I was already intimately familiar with, mostly because I had belonged to it for most of my adult life! Long story short, because I think they are really fun, and wanted to help creators help more people have fun!
My Promises to You

“Write What You Know”
That’s what a mentor told me over a decade ago.
It sparked a joy for research, learning, and communicating that continues to flourish today.
“Don’t fake it. Don’t half-ass it. Don’t be boring”
Now I use that passion to help business owners that struggle to put their value into words that convert.
Its inherently interesting to discover what makes you special, write in your unique voice,
And help your business THRIVE.
